There’s more to a long career than being a ‘good actor’.
By the time I’d graduated drama school in 2012, I was given every award 3rd year had to offer. I thought I was set. By every metric I could see, I was a “good actor”, destined for never-ending opportunities and work. But that’s not how the industry operates…
By 27, I hit a dead end. My career was stagnant. No intention. Nowhere to put my energy. And no way to do the thing I loved. I was stuck, in my behaviours, my habits and a horrible cycle of self-judgment. I had two options; continue down the path I was on, feeling bitter and resenting the industry or… take responsibility for my life and career.
I went back to school and over the next few years, I invested in coaches, learned new skills, established meaningful connections and slowly but surely, things began to shift. Rather than trying to book a “job”, and relying on acting for survival, my focus became how to build a sustainable life and career around my work. And…to my surprise, the opportunities I had so desperately craved, began to come to me.
Within five years, I was standing on the set of, HBO Max, Paramount+ and Netflix productions, opposite the likes of Sam Neill, Jamie Dornan, Sam Worthington and Toni Collette.
So, why am I doing this? Well… If one day, I was told I could never act again, if I was unable to write, or perform in any capacity - I’d spend the rest of my life helping others do it. I’d devote all my time to helping people create and make stories that matter to them, and help them deliver those stories in performances that make them proud. That’s why I’m here. (Although, at this stage, I’m still allowed to act).
This has been a long time coming and I’m so excited to be sharing with you everything I’ve learned so far by failing and flying in this wild industry over the past fifteen years. Hopefully there’s something in here that you find valuable.
Welcome to The Resilient Actor.
Let’s have some fun.
